Family Chat: strangers, storage and a move to ElfHosted

Family Chat on ElfHosted, after a stranger signs up to the family's home chat server, the storage fills and the certificate runs out. Part three of The Family Group Chat. The family's chat server on the little box in the hallway has a week: sign-ups were left open and a stranger called Goblin Lord is selling sunglasses in the family chat, Nana's photos fill its little card, and the certificate runs out, so the apps can't connect. Robin's away for work tomorrow. Uncle Darren's fix: close sign-ups, a bigger drive, scripted renewals and a mirror in his basement. One weekend. Maybe two. So Robin moves the family to Family Chat on ElfHosted: a private family chat on its own private server, at a secure address. It's an invite only chat: there's no sign-up page, and each person gets their own one-time invite code that works once and expires after seven days. Every chat is an encrypted group chat from the moment it's made, so we can't read your messages or photos. Like any chat server, it still knows who is chatting and when, because it has to deliver them. It's kept running and updated, backed up daily, and you can restore it yourself. Family Chat costs $9 a month after a 7-day trial; your own domain is an optional add-on. Family Chat runs Matrix, an open chat standard, on tuwunel, an open source Matrix server, unmodified. ElfHosted is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Matrix.org Foundation or the tuwunel project. When the family moves to ElfHosted, Sam, ElfHosted's AI helper, is Robin's sidekick: tuned on our apps and the way we run them, he safely reads your actual logs and proposes a fix, and nothing changes until you approve it. When Sam can't help, the ElfHosted team is on Discord around the clock, in a family-friendly, carefully moderated server. The Family Group Chat is a short animated saga from ElfHosted about one family's chats: from a kid too young for the big chat apps and a cake photo sent to a stranger, to a chat server on the little box in the hallway, and on to a private family chat the elves run. Each part stands on its own; watch them in order in the playlist on our channel.
