Mealie away from home: moving the shopping list

Mealie at home, until Robin's at the shop: the shopping list only loads on the home wifi, an update breaks it, and the laptop swells. Part three of What's for Dinner? The family's Mealie runs on the old laptop in the hall cupboard, and the Mealie shopping list only loads on the home wifi, so Robin stands next to the eggs with a list that just spins. That week, one of the Mealie updates breaks it, and nobody has an evening to roll it back. By Thursday the laptop's battery has gone puffy, like a pillow. Uncle Darren's fix: open a port, add a certificate and rebuild it all on a mini PC, one weekend, then one more for backups. So Robin moves to hosted Mealie on ElfHosted. It has a secure address of its own, so the shopping list opens on every phone at the shop. It's kept running, the updates are our job, it's backed up daily with restores you do yourself, and it's private behind your ElfHosted login. The laptop can retire before it pops. Hosted Mealie is part of the ElfHosted Flex collection: a Flex plan runs several apps from the collection at once, and you swap which ones whenever you like. Every Flex plan starts with a 7-day trial. Mealie is open source; ElfHosted is not affiliated with the project. You can support Mealie's developer through the link below. Sam sends a push alert if Mealie goes down (once you've said yes to its alerts), tells you why, and restarts it with your OK. When the family moves to ElfHosted, Sam, ElfHosted's AI helper, is Robin's sidekick: tuned on our apps and the way we run them, he safely reads your actual logs and proposes a fix, and nothing changes until you approve it. When Sam can't help, the ElfHosted team is on Discord around the clock, in a family-friendly, carefully moderated server. What's for Dinner? is a short animated saga from ElfHosted about one family's recipes: from Nana's fading recipe cards and a shopping list on the wrong phone, to a recipe app on the laptop in the hall cupboard, and on to a family cookbook the elves run. Each part stands on its own; watch them in order in the playlist on our channel.
